AUSTRALIAN RUM REINVENTED

SYDNEY'S RICH RUM HISTORY

Between 1816 and 1848, the General Hospital on Sydney’s Macquarie Street, provided medical care for the colony’s convict workforce.

The hospital was Lachlan Macquarie’s first public works project as Governor of New South Wales, and having been denied the necessary finances to build it, he struck up a deal with merchants Alexander Riley and Garnham Blaxcell, and colonial surgeon D’Arcy Wentworth. In exchange for a monopoly on the importation of 45,000 gallons of rum (spirits) to the colony, these contractors built Macquarie’s hospital, which as a result, became popularly known as the ‘Rum Hospital’.

The hospital south wing is now known as The Mint, and the north wing is NSW Parliament House.

Today, the north and south wings are the earliest surviving public buildings in central Sydney, and the earliest examples of classical architectural detailing in Australia.

Brix Distillers has partnered with Sydney Living Museums, to produce a limited edition rum, housed in the ‘Rum Hospital’ for 6 months to tie Sydney’s rich history to its bright future.

With a strong tie to Sydney’s early settlement history, Rum played a dark, but important, role in our city’s conception and Brix Distillers aims to cement rum's strong future.

“In this city, Rum made history. Now we are making Rum.”

The rum housed in the Rum Hospital will be bottled under an exclusive release by Brix Distillers in collaboration with Sydney Living Museums and will be available for delivery in mid-2023.
